The match wasn't given its' iconic name until 1830, and its' original name was lucifer. In the 1800's, different kinds of matches were produced from chemical matches to self-igniting ones.

Surfaces that are typically made for the igniting of a match consist of a few different components: red phosphorus, glass crystals, carbon black, a binder, and a neutralizer.
